What is a BCIN Designer?

BCIN stands for Building Code Identification Number.

A BCIN license is a set of requirements and qualifications set out by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Housing. Each individual professional has a unique identification number. A number is received after successfully completing testing on the Ontario Building Code. People that can hold this designation are architectural technicians/drafters and designer who provide construction drawings, building officials and inspectors, and/or septic installers.

Are you required to get a BCIN?

Architectural designers, technologists, and technicians are required to obtain a BCIN is submitting architectural permits to municipalities within Ontario. Architects are exempt as they receive building code training through their training.

What can a BCIN Designer do in comparison to an architect?

Generally, designers will take an exam for either the House or Small buildings BCIN. The House certification allows for designers to submit permits for single family homes and other structures like garages, shed, decks, etc. The Small Buildings certification allows them to do anything under 6458 sf / 600 sm. This can be residential or commercial.

Benefits of working with a BCIN Designer.

BCIN designers are generally much more cost effective than an Architect. Because architects are qualified to provide a wide variety of services, while BCIN designers qualification are more acute and specific, this allows the costs to be kept lower for their services.
